Philosophy for coding tricks
A lot of what we do in programming is defining a subset of the language that
we’re comfortable working with. This is especially notable with C++, but is seen
elsewhere. In our subset of the language we adopt a lot of little tricks and
rules that reduce the mental burden of writing code. This way we can write code
quickly without having to think about every single line. If your mental rule...

TinEye Safari Extensions →
TinEye is a cool reverse image search engine. It lets you take an image and search for it on the web, even finding uncropped, expanded, or unwatermarked versions of the image. Sadly, while TinEye…
CleanGoogle Safari extension →
If you’re like anybody else that I know, you were rather shocked and appalled to see Google follow the likes of Bing and add background images to their home page. If you’re also like anybody else…

1Password extension loading in Snow Leopard →
One of the big changes in Snow Leopard is the move to 64-bit applications system-wide. This includes Safari. Unfortunately, this change breaks all of the Safari plugins out there, including mine….

Major FontLabel update →
Last week I pushed out a major rewrite of FontLabel. This new version includes a category modeled after UIStringDrawing that enables you to draw text in custom fonts in your own drawRect:…

If you’ve been following me, you’re aware that I’ve been working at Zynga for the past two weeks. Well, they’re still hiring more people (and not just iPhone developers). You can see the available…
ExecTweets on the App Store →
My last iPhone contract app, ExecTweets for iPhone, is now on the App Store. This is the project that drove the creation of FeedParser (an open source Obj-C RSS parser). Anyway, it’s free, and…

iPhone Protip: Fake navbar buttons
If you need to have a third button in your navigation bar, you’ve probably discovered already that you can’t add a UIBarButtonItem as you only have 2 slots for those, on the left and the right. There’s the titleView property, but you need to provide your own view and UIButton doesn’t have a style for bar buttons.
However, there is a reasonably easy solution....

iPhone Protip: nib top-level objects
When UIViewController loads a nib file, it does not retain all top-level objects in the nib (unlike MainWindow.nib where all top-level objects are retained). If you use top-level objects besides your view, you must make sure you implement the IBOutlets as retained properties.

Prince of Persia (PS3) →
The latest Prince of Persia game is a fresh start for the Prince of Persia series, focusing more on acrobatics and puzzles than on combat. I’ve only just started playing today, but so far I can say I love the visual style, the voice acting is great, and the writing is good. If you liked Sands of Time, I definitely recommend this. And there’s a version for the Xbox 360 or PC as well if...

Just picked up Tumblrette and turned off auto-posting of my Twitter stream. Hopefully I’ll now actually post things.
Sitting in Sanders Theatre waiting for the Christmas Revels to start. And it looks like Yo Yo Ma is in the audience!
Installing World of Warcraft on my laptop so I can get my present from Grandfather Winter later
Merry Christmas!
Packing for my flight back to MA
I am now at Questlog Zero. Wait, that’s not a GTD thing?
If you go debugging with Syncrospector, don’t forget you have to sync the MobileMe client too and not just the given app’s client
Yojimbo still won’t sync via MobileMe despite the absence of errors. I think I’m going to have to spend some quality time with Syncrospector
No wonder Yojimbo hasn’t been syncing - I’ve been using 1.4.1 on my laptop!
Ah, I finally have my MP3s backed up with TM
Hrm, looks like ⌃F6 is also being sucked up. What on earth could be doing this?
I shut down every process I could think of, ⌃F4/F6 still taken. I restarted, they’re finally free… but my desktop background is gone!
Whoa, the Keyboard prefpane can actually see ⌃F4 if I go into hotkey edit mode, but besides that it doesn’t work.
Even enabling “Move focus to the active window or next window” doesn’t seem to get the hotkey
I just can’t figure out what’s sucking up my ⌃F4 keyboard shortcut. Nothing happens when I press it - even WoW can’t see it
Safari’s giving me malicious site warnings for, I believe, the ads on the visited page. Rather irritating
I really wish QuickTime Player had a user-settable audio delay. It’s generally the only reason to launch VLC these days
Time to install my new 1TB drive
Pirates of the Caribbean 3 is a significantly better movie than Pirates 2. It really doesn’t get recognized for that enough.
Given the amount of Rum talk, R&C is an extremely appropriate drink to imbibe while watching Pirates of the Caribbean 3.
It is rather strange that Chow Yun Fat had a role in Pirates 3 that did not involve any martial arts
Thinking about regrowing my beard. I kinda miss it.
Bill NIghy does an amazing job as Davy Jones. Why have I not seen him in anything else?
Watching Orlando Bloom in Pirates 3 really makes me want to watch Lord of the Rings. Why isn’t that out in Blu-Ray yet?
What would have happened if Davy Jones pierced his own heart?
What the… I lost my iPhone 2.2 documentation set!
What’s up with reddit tonight? It’s going down more frequently than twitter!
Rolando is out for for the iPhone/iPod Touch!
Huh, I deleted one page from a PDF in Preview and the size ballooned from 554.1KB to 4.1MB.
Why do some online places require you to put “special” chars in your password? It’s not any more secure if the attacker knows it’s there!
To all those who responded: Making those chars *available* increases search space. Requiring them usually forces people to mangle passwords.
Huh, the Finder’s springy folders doesn’t work on the Path bar
Purchasing a 1TB drive to replace my current backup drive (which will then replace my current MP3 drive).
Why won’t Spotlight open my web history in WebKit? It always goes for Safari
